The bones found in our salmon are soft enough to eat and break with a spoon or fork. Our traditional sockeye and pink salmon variety are perfect for those looking to add additional calcium into their diet.

All Raincoast Trading Albacore Tuna is kept frozen during preparation for canning and cooked only once to preserve the natural oils and flavour. Other seafood providers cook their tuna twice – once before canning and then again during the canning process and then add oil or water to keep the tuna moist. We believe the double-cooking process is inferior and decreases both the flavour and nutrition value of the final product.

Sourcing & Sustainability

We currently source our albacore from the British Columbia / US West Coast troll and pole albacore fishery. The fishery is Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified and considered “BEST CHOICE” by numerous organizations including the Ocean Wise , SeaChoice, Seafood Watch.

Raincoast Trading Albacore Tuna are caught 50 miles off the Washington, Oregon and British Columbia coastlines in the Pacific Northwest region. This area is a prime location along the Albacore’s migration pattern. When the tuna pass through this area their flesh has its greatest oil content making for a better tasting, more nutritious fish.

We source our salmon from the cold, pristine ocean waters of the Pacific Northwest. To ensure the future salmon stocks, we catch our salmon with care and attention using species-specific, selective harvesting methods.

Raincoast is committed to providing customers with clear and complete labelling. Our products are labelled with species, common name, catch area catch method and stock.

As part of our ongoing commitment to quality and sustainability, we have designed a system to track the fish from can to boat. Production codes on the bottom of Raincoast cans are designed to give an expiry date, and we also use them to trace the origin of the fish. With this code we can identify the vessel, captain, name, vessel flag, harvest method, area of capture and trip dates.

The MSC blue label is applied when fish or seafood is wild-caught from fisheries certified by the MSC Fisheries Standard. The MSC Fisheries Standard is a science-based set of requirements for sustainable fishing.

Ocean Wise™ is a Vancouver Aquarium™ conservation program created to educate and empower consumers about the issues surrounding sustainable seafood. Ocean Wise™ launched in 2005 with restaurants and markets to ensure that they were armed with the latest scientific information to make ocean-friendly buying decisions. Participating restaurants identified Ocean Wise™ choices on their menus, making it easier for diners to make environmentally friendly seafood choices. In 2009, Ocean Wise™ expanded its successful program to include suppliers, retailers and producers. Raincoast Trading is proud to be Canada’s first, founding producer partner endorsed by Ocean Wise™. Look for the Ocean Wise™ logo on our products at your nearest grocer.

Several criteria must be met to qualify for Ocean Wise™ status:
• The fish caught must be abundant and resilient to fishing pressures
• Well managed with a comprehensive management plan based on current research
• Harvested using methods that minimize bycatch and non-targeted/endangered species
• Harvested in ways that limit damage to marine or aquatic habitats and negative interactions with other species
